Our Story
Crafted with care since 1974 in the heart of Texas. The recipe that started it all was created in 1974 by Ben Burkholder. Built on hard work, pride, and a passion for making something truly special, that recipe became the foundation of a family legacy.
In 1989, Ben Burkholder officially founded The Toffee Company after being asked to make toffee for a holiday bazaar. He prepared a small batch, packaged it in festive bags, and it sold out before the event even began. More was made, it sold out again, and what started as a simple request quickly became something much bigger.
Demand continued to grow year after year. What began in a small "one butt kitchen" became a beloved Texas business known for handcrafted toffee, loyal customers, and holiday traditions. Through church bazaars, gift shows, mail orders, and special events, The Toffee Company reached families across Texas and beyond. The business later expanded to shows in cities throughout the South and Midwest and even gained national attention through television features.
At the center of that success was the same commitment that built the Burkholder name from the beginning: quality, consistency, and care. We still make our toffee in small batches to ensure every batch meets the same standard our family has always believed in.
In 2015, I joined The Toffee Company and learned the business from the ground up. I learned every part of the process and became deeply proud of what my grandfather built. After Ben passed, my dad became the owner, and I managed the company while he helped care for my children so I could continue building our family legacy.
Like many small businesses, we faced challenges during COVID and took time away. But some traditions are too meaningful to leave behind.
Today, I am proud to return as the third generation carrying this legacy forward and reintroducing Toffee Co in a new chapter. We still use the same recipe created in 1974 and make every batch with the same pride, the same attention to detail, and the same signature thin, crisp texture that melts in your mouth.
This is more than candy. It is family, tradition, and a recipe worth sharing again.
